Cardano was founded in 2015 by Charles Hoskinson, a former Ethereum co-founder, through the research company IOHK (now IOG). The project aimed to build a blockchain on peer-reviewed research, using a proof-of-stake protocol called Ouroboros. The token ADA is named after Ada Lovelace, an early pioneer of computing. The token sale ran in 2017, and the mainnet launched in September 2017. Smart contracts arrived later with the Alonzo upgrade in September 2021, after delays that drew criticism. ADA fell sharply in the 2018 bear market, the March 2020 COVID crash, and the broad sell-offs of May and November 2022.
