AUD/USD (Australian Dollar / US Dollar)

Aussie dollar against US dollar. A major pair often moved by commodity prices and global risk sentiment.

0.70180.68637

AUD/USD shows how many US dollars one Australian dollar buys. It is one of the major currency pairs and is popular because it is liquid and closely tied to commodities and risk appetite. Traders use it to express views on China, raw material exports, and the interest rate gap between Australia and the US.

🕐 Active hours: Most active 13:00-17:00 UTC (London-New York overlap). Also active 21:00-08:00 UTC during the Sydney and Tokyo sessions.

📜 History

The Australian dollar replaced the Australian pound in 1966 when Australia adopted decimal currency. Before 1983 its value was managed by the government against a trade-weighted basket. In December 1983 the Labor government under Bob Hawke and Treasurer Paul Keating floated the currency, so the market began to set its value. The float gave AUD/USD a clear link to commodity exports. The Asian financial crisis of 1997-1998 pushed the pair sharply lower. During the 2008-2009 global financial crisis it fell from near parity to around 0.60, and in 2011 it rose above parity during the mining boom. In March 2020, COVID-19 market stress drove it to multi-year lows.

⚙️ What moves the price

  • RBA cash rate decisions and the interest rate gap with the US Federal Reserve
  • Iron ore and coal prices, as Australia is a major exporter of these commodities
  • Economic data from China, Australia's largest trading partner
  • Global risk sentiment: the Aussie often rises in risk-on markets and falls in risk-off periods
  • Australian employment and inflation (CPI) releases, plus US dollar strength

Character

  • Usually more volatile than EUR/USD and other majors
  • Tends to move with stock markets and commodity prices
  • Sharp moves can happen on China news or sudden shifts in risk sentiment
  • Liquidity is deepest during London and New York hours

When to trade

  • London-New York overlap, when volume and liquidity peak
  • Around RBA meetings and major Australian data releases, with clear plans
  • During clear trends backed by commodity or China-related news

When not to trade

  • Around RBA decisions and Chinese data releases without a plan for sudden spikes
  • Late New York session and thin weekend-open conditions, where spreads can widen
  • Overleveraging after a fast move, a common mistake with this volatile pair
