Ava Labs, founded by Emin Gün Sirer, Kevin Sekniqi and Ted Yin, published the Avalanche consensus whitepaper in 2018 under the pseudonym Team Rocket. The aim was a fast, low-cost blockchain that could run smart contracts. The token sale took place in 2020, and the mainnet launched in September 2020. Avalanche added EVM compatibility on its C-Chain, which made it easier for Ethereum developers to build on it. Activity from DeFi, NFTs and gaming grew strongly in 2021, when the AVAX price reached its all-time high in November of that year. The 2022 crypto downturn, which followed the collapse of Terra in May and FTX in November, pushed the price down sharply.
