BNB was created in July 2017 as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum to fund the Binance exchange through an initial coin offering. The ICO sold 100 million tokens at $0.10 each, from a total supply of 200 million. Binance was founded in 2017 by Changpeng Zhao and Yi He. In May 2019, hackers stole about 7,000 bitcoin from Binance's hot wallets, and the exchange covered user losses from its SAFU fund. In 2019 BNB moved to its own Binance Chain, and in September 2020 the BNB Smart Chain launched. In November 2022 the collapse of FTX shook the sector and BNB fell sharply, and in November 2023 Changpeng Zhao pleaded guilty to US money laundering compliance charges and stepped down as CEO.
