Bitcoin is a decentralized digital currency. It runs on a public ledger called a blockchain, with no central bank or single owner. Traders use BTCUSDT to bet on price moves in both directions, often with leverage.

🕐 Active hours: 24/7. Highest activity usually 13:00–21:00 UTC (US hours) and 00:00–08:00 UTC (Asian hours).

📜 History

Bitcoin was described in a whitepaper published on 31 October 2008 by a person or group using the name Satoshi Nakamoto. The network launched in January 2009, with the first block mined on 3 January. It was created as a peer-to-peer payment system that did not need banks, after the 2008 financial crisis. The first known commercial purchase came in May 2010, when a programmer paid 10,000 BTC for two pizzas. In February 2014 the Mt. Gox exchange filed for bankruptcy after losing about 850,000 BTC. Supply is capped at 21 million coins, and block rewards are cut in half roughly every four years; the latest halving was in April 2024. The collapse of the FTX exchange in November 2022 deepened a crypto market downturn.

⚙️ What moves the price

  • US interest rates and central bank policy: looser money often supports risk assets, tighter policy often pressures them.
  • US inflation and jobs data (CPI, payrolls): surprises can move crypto sharply.
  • Spot Bitcoin ETF flows: net inflows and outflows from regulated funds in the US, which began trading in January 2024.
  • Correlation with stocks, especially the Nasdaq: BTC often falls during broad risk-off selloffs.
  • Regulation and legal news: rules in the US, EU, China and other countries can shift sentiment quickly.

Character

  • Very volatile: daily moves of 5% or more are common.
  • Trades 24/7, including weekends and holidays, so news can hit at any hour.
  • Sentiment-driven: strong trends and sharp reversals, often amplified by liquidations of leveraged positions.
  • Liquidity is deep on major venues but can thin out during sudden moves.

When to trade

  • US trading hours, when stock market and ETF liquidity is highest.
  • Around major scheduled data releases, with risk levels set in advance.

When not to trade

  • Holding large positions into major data releases or Fed decisions without a plan.
  • Using high leverage on weekends or in thin hours, where a sudden move can liquidate positions.
  • Chasing a move after a sharp spike driven by hype.
