Bitcoin was described in a whitepaper published on 31 October 2008 by a person or group using the name Satoshi Nakamoto. The network launched in January 2009, with the first block mined on 3 January. It was created as a peer-to-peer payment system that did not need banks, after the 2008 financial crisis. The first known commercial purchase came in May 2010, when a programmer paid 10,000 BTC for two pizzas. In February 2014 the Mt. Gox exchange filed for bankruptcy after losing about 850,000 BTC. Supply is capped at 21 million coins, and block rewards are cut in half roughly every four years; the latest halving was in April 2024. The collapse of the FTX exchange in November 2022 deepened a crypto market downturn.
