Dash started in January 2014 as Darkcoin, created by developer Evan Duffield. It was forked from Litecoin's code, which is based on Bitcoin's open-source design. The project was renamed Dash in March 2015, partly to move away from the dark name. In 2015 it introduced masternodes, which are full nodes that lock collateral and earn rewards for running services. Dash rose sharply in late 2017 and early 2018 during the crypto boom, then fell in the 2018 bear market. Privacy coins later faced exchange delistings and regulatory scrutiny in several countries, which reduced liquidity for some of them.
