The first meme coin — extremely volatile and driven by social media.
Dogecoin was created in 2013 as a joke based on the "Doge" meme, but it became one of the largest cryptocurrencies. Its price depends heavily on news, social media and the general mood in crypto.

Dogecoin was launched on December 6, 2013, by software engineer Billy Markus and Adobe marketer Jackson Palmer. It was a parody of Bitcoin and forked from Litecoin's code. Early use centered on online tipping and community charity, including funding for the Jamaican bobsled team at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. Palmer left the project in 2015, and Markus stepped back shortly after. Dogecoin stayed niche until 2021, when social media hype and public posts by Elon Musk drove a sharp rally and a record high in May 2021. It then fell with the broader crypto downturn of 2022, including the collapse of FTX in November 2022. Its supply is not capped, so new coins keep being issued.
