Multi-chain network token used for staking, governance and linking separate blockchains together.

DOT is the native token of Polkadot, a network that connects many blockchains, called parachains, under one shared security layer. Holders stake DOT to secure the network and vote on upgrades. Traders watch it for exposure to the broader crypto market and the theme of blockchain interoperability.
🕐 Active hours: 24/7 market. Most active around 13:00-17:00 UTC, when European and US sessions overlap.
📜 History
Gavin Wood, a co-founder of Ethereum and its former technology chief, published the Polkadot whitepaper in 2016. The goal was to let separate blockchains share security and pass messages to each other. The Web3 Foundation ran the DOT token sale in 2017. The Polkadot mainnet launched in May 2020. Kusama, a sister network launched in 2019, served as a testing ground for upgrades. In 2021, parachain slot auctions began, which led to a wave of new projects. During the 2022 crypto downturn, the token fell sharply along with the wider market.
⚙️ What moves the price
→Moves in the overall crypto market, especially Bitcoin and Ethereum, which often set DOT's direction.
→Macro conditions: US Federal Reserve rate decisions and dollar strength shape appetite for risk assets.
→Network events such as parachain auctions, governance votes and core runtime upgrades.
→Token supply changes, including staking levels and unlocks of tokens held by early investors and the team.
→Competition from other layer-1 and interoperability networks.
Character
•High volatility, with large daily moves in both directions being common.
•Often moves with the broader crypto market, and correlation rises in risk-off periods.
•Trades 24/7, and its strongest moves often coincide with US market hours.
•Liquidity is lower than Bitcoin's, so fast moves can cause slippage in thin markets.
When to trade
✅Periods of clear trend in the crypto market, where volume supports the move.
✅Around the US market open, when liquidity and volume usually rise.
✅Around scheduled major events such as governance votes or key macro data, with risk awareness.
When not to trade
⛔Right before major macro releases or during sudden crypto news shocks.
⛔Low-volume weekend hours, when spreads can widen and moves can turn sharp.
⛔Using high leverage on a volatile altcoin, since sharp moves can trigger forced liquidations.
