Vitalik Buterin proposed Ethereum in late 2013 as a blockchain for general smart contracts, not only payments. The Ethereum Foundation, a Swiss non-profit set up in 2014, led development. The network launched on July 30, 2015. In June 2016, a flaw in The DAO smart contract led to a hack of about 3.6 million ETH, and the community voted for a hard fork that created a separate chain called Ethereum Classic. Prices fell sharply in 2018 and again in 2022 during major crypto collapses. In September 2022, The Merge moved the network from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake, cutting energy use by more than 99 percent. In July 2024, US spot ether ETFs began trading.
