EUR/CAD (EUR/CAD) – Euro vs Canadian Dollar

Cross pair of the euro and the Canadian dollar, moved mainly by ECB and Bank of Canada policy and oil prices.

1.5581.57349

EUR/CAD shows how many Canadian dollars one euro buys. It is a cross pair, so it does not include the US dollar. Traders use it to trade the difference between European and Canadian economic conditions, interest rates and commodity cycles.

🕐 Active hours: 07:00–17:00 UTC, peak 12:00–16:00 UTC (London–New York overlap)

📜 History

EUR/CAD has no single creation date. It exists because both currencies trade freely against other currencies. The euro was launched as an electronic currency on 1 January 1999 by eurozone countries, and euro notes and coins followed in 2002. Canada floated its dollar in 1970 after strains in the Bretton Woods fixed-rate system, and the Canadian dollar has floated since. The pair grew in importance after 1999 as trade and investment between Europe and Canada expanded. Major stress points include the 2008–2009 global financial crisis, which hit both currencies, and the 2010–2012 eurozone debt crisis, which weighed on the euro. The 2014–2015 oil price collapse pushed the Canadian dollar lower, because oil is a major Canadian export. In 2022, the European energy shock and rate hikes by the ECB and Bank of Canada caused sharp moves.

⚙️ What moves the price

  • ECB and Bank of Canada interest rate decisions and guidance
  • Euro area inflation and GDP data versus Canadian inflation and jobs data
  • Crude oil prices, since the Canadian dollar is sensitive to oil
  • Global risk sentiment, with the Canadian dollar often weaker in risk-off periods
  • Political or energy events in the eurozone

Character

  • Moderate volatility for a cross pair, with sharp moves around oil or rate news
  • Often trends for weeks when oil and interest rate expectations diverge
  • Liquidity is strongest during European and North American hours
  • Spreads widen and moves can be erratic in thin Asian-session trading

When to trade

  • London and New York overlap, when liquidity is highest
  • Around scheduled ECB and Bank of Canada decisions, with a clear plan in place
  • When crude oil is trending and rate expectations are clear

When not to trade

  • Right before or during central bank announcements without a defined risk plan
  • Late Asian hours and holiday periods with thin liquidity
  • Using high leverage because the pair can move sharply on oil headlines
