Cross pair of the euro and the Canadian dollar, moved mainly by ECB and Bank of Canada policy and oil prices.
EUR/CAD shows how many Canadian dollars one euro buys. It is a cross pair, so it does not include the US dollar. Traders use it to trade the difference between European and Canadian economic conditions, interest rates and commodity cycles.

EUR/CAD has no single creation date. It exists because both currencies trade freely against other currencies. The euro was launched as an electronic currency on 1 January 1999 by eurozone countries, and euro notes and coins followed in 2002. Canada floated its dollar in 1970 after strains in the Bretton Woods fixed-rate system, and the Canadian dollar has floated since. The pair grew in importance after 1999 as trade and investment between Europe and Canada expanded. Major stress points include the 2008–2009 global financial crisis, which hit both currencies, and the 2010–2012 eurozone debt crisis, which weighed on the euro. The 2014–2015 oil price collapse pushed the Canadian dollar lower, because oil is a major Canadian export. In 2022, the European energy shock and rate hikes by the ECB and Bank of Canada caused sharp moves.
