Cross rate of the British pound against the Australian dollar, with no direct central bank peg.
GBP/AUD shows how the British pound moves against the Australian dollar. It is a cross pair, so it does not include the US dollar. Traders use it to trade the gap between UK and Australian interest rates, economic data and commodity demand.
🕐 Active hours: Most active 07:00-11:00 UTC (London open and late Asian hours). Thinner late evening and Asian hours.
The pair has no single creation date. It exists because both currencies float freely. The pound moved to floating rates in 1972, after the Bretton Woods fixed-rate system collapsed in 1971. The Australian dollar was floated in December 1983 by the Australian government, when Paul Keating was Treasurer. Sterling was forced out of the European Exchange Rate Mechanism on Black Wednesday, 16 September 1992. The global financial crisis of 2008 hit both the pound and the Australian dollar hard. The Brexit referendum on 23 June 2016 caused a sharp fall in sterling. The COVID-19 shock in March 2020 caused large moves in the Australian dollar as risky assets fell.
