GBP/CHF (British Pound / Swiss Franc)

Cross rate of the British pound against the Swiss franc, driven by UK and Swiss central bank policy.

1.102171.09541

GBP/CHF shows how many Swiss francs one British pound buys. It has no direct link to the US dollar, so traders use it to trade the pound against a currency seen as a safe haven. It is often used by those who follow Bank of England and Swiss National Bank policy.

🕐 Active hours: 07:00-11:00 UTC (London and Zurich morning); secondary peak 13:00-16:00 UTC (London-New York overlap)

📜 History

GBP/CHF is a cross rate, so it has no single launch date. It exists because both currencies trade freely against each other. The pound sterling has roots in the Bank of England, founded in 1694. The Swiss franc became the national currency in 1850 under Swiss federal monetary law. After the Bretton Woods system ended in 1971, major currencies floated, which made crosses like GBP/CHF widely quoted. The Swiss National Bank set a 1.20 euro floor for the franc in September 2011 to limit its strength. On 15 January 2015 it removed that floor, causing a sudden franc surge and large moves in GBP/CHF. The 2016 Brexit referendum on 23 June 2016 caused a sharp fall in sterling against the franc.

  • Late Asian session and rollover hours, when liquidity is thin and spreads widen
  • Chasing large moves without a plan for risk management
