The "beast" — one of the most volatile major crosses.
GBP/JPY combines the active pound with the yen, which reacts to global risk mood. The result is a pair with wide daily ranges, loved by trend traders and dangerous for those without a stop.
🕐 Active hours: London + Tokyo
GBP/JPY has no single creation date. It exists because both currencies trade freely on world markets. Sterling left the gold standard in 1931 and later took part in the Bretton Woods system, which ended in 1971. Japan moved the yen to a floating rate in 1973. The pair grew in popularity as Japanese markets opened and interest rate gaps between the two countries widened. Key moments include sterling's exit from the European Exchange Rate Mechanism in 1992, the Asian crisis of 1997-98, and the 2008 financial crisis, when yen-funded carry trades were unwound and the yen rose sharply. The 2016 Brexit referendum caused a sharp fall in the pound.
