Gold (XAU/USD)

The world's main safe-haven asset and the most traded metal.

3896.44065.03

Gold has been a store of value for thousands of years. Today it is priced in US dollars and traded around the clock. Central banks hold it as a reserve, and investors buy it when they fear inflation, crises or wars.

🕐 Active hours: London + New York, 07:00–17:00 UTC

📜 History

Gold has been used as money since at least around 600 BC, when Lydia made some of the first coins from electrum, a gold-silver alloy. Through the 1800s many countries tied their currencies to gold under the gold standard. After 1944, the Bretton Woods system pegged the US dollar to gold at $35 an ounce, and other currencies were pegged to the dollar. In August 1971, President Nixon ended the dollar's convertibility into gold, and the price was later allowed to float. Gold reached a major peak near $850 in January 1980 and then fell for about two decades. It rose sharply after the 2008 financial crisis and again during the 2020 COVID shock.

⚙️ What moves the price

  • US dollar and real interest rates: a weaker dollar and lower real yields usually support gold, since gold pays no interest.
  • Central bank buying and reserve policy: large official purchases can lift demand and support the price.
  • Inflation and economic data: US CPI, jobs reports and Federal Reserve decisions often move gold sharply.
  • Geopolitical and financial stress: wars, sanctions, and banking worries can drive safe-haven buying.
  • Related markets: gold often moves against the dollar and sometimes with silver and mining stocks, but these links change over time.

Character

  • High volatility: a normal day moves 1–2%, news days much more.
  • Moves opposite to the US dollar and US bond yields most of the time.
  • Reacts strongly to US inflation (CPI), jobs (NFP) and Fed rate decisions.
  • Clean trends after the London open and during the London–New York overlap.

When to trade

  • London session and the London–New York overlap (07:00–17:00 UTC).
  • In the direction of the higher-timeframe trend, after a pullback.
  • On days without major US news, or after the news spike has settled.

When not to trade

  • 5–15 minutes before and after CPI, NFP and Fed decisions — spreads widen and price jumps.
  • Late New York and the night (21:00–01:00 UTC): thin liquidity, wide spread.
  • Against a strong trend just because the price looks "too high".
