Gold has long served as a store of value, and for much of the 20th century it was tied to the US dollar. Under the Bretton Woods system, agreed in 1944, the dollar was pegged to gold at 35 dollars per ounce. The United States ended dollar convertibility into gold in 1971, and gold began to float freely. The euro was launched as a money of account in 1999 and as cash in 2002, creating a new major currency to price gold against. Gold's nominal price peaked near 850 dollars in January 1980 amid high inflation, then fell for about two decades. Gold rose sharply after the 2008 financial crisis and reached record highs in 2011 and 2020. Central banks became net buyers of gold in the 2010s and bought heavily again from 2022.
