The world's main safe-haven asset and the most traded metal.
Gold has been a store of value for thousands of years. Today it is priced in US dollars and traded around the clock. Central banks hold it as a reserve, and investors buy it when they fear inflation, crises or wars.

Gold has been used as money since at least around 600 BC, when Lydia made some of the first coins from electrum, a gold-silver alloy. Through the 1800s many countries tied their currencies to gold under the gold standard. After 1944, the Bretton Woods system pegged the US dollar to gold at $35 an ounce, and other currencies were pegged to the dollar. In August 1971, President Nixon ended the dollar's convertibility into gold, and the price was later allowed to float. Gold reached a major peak near $850 in January 1980 and then fell for about two decades. It rose sharply after the 2008 financial crisis and again during the 2020 COVID shock.
