Decentralized oracle network that feeds real-world data to blockchain smart contracts.
Chainlink is a network that brings external data, such as asset prices, into blockchain smart contracts. LINK is its token, used to pay node operators and, later, for staking. Traders watch LINK for its links to the wider crypto and DeFi market.
🕐 Active hours: 24/7 market. Most active about 13:00-17:00 UTC (US and Europe overlap).
Chainlink was described in a whitepaper by Sergey Nazarov and Steve Ellis, published in 2017. It was created to solve a basic problem: smart contracts on blockchains cannot reach data outside the chain on their own. The LINK token was sold to the public in 2017 and is used to pay node operators. The main oracle network went live in 2019. LINK rose strongly during the DeFi boom of 2020, as many lending and trading protocols used its price feeds. It reached its all-time high in May 2021 during the wider crypto bull market. In 2022, it fell sharply in the crypto downturn that followed the Terra and FTX collapses.
