Litecoin: a 2011 Bitcoin-based crypto coin, traded against USDT for 24/7 exposure.

54.6151.82

Litecoin is a peer-to-peer cryptocurrency that works like a faster, lower-fee version of Bitcoin. LTCUSDT shows the price of LTC in Tether USD. Traders use it for short-term moves, liquidity and round-the-clock exposure to the crypto market.

🕐 Active hours: 24/7 market. Most active roughly 13:00-17:00 UTC, when US and European hours overlap.

📜 History

Litecoin was created in October 2011 by Charlie Lee, a former Google engineer. It was forked from the Bitcoin Core code with key changes: blocks come about every 2.5 minutes instead of 10, the supply cap is 84 million instead of 21 million, and mining uses the Scrypt algorithm. It became one of the first major altcoins and a testing ground for Bitcoin-style upgrades. Segregated Witness was activated on its network in 2017. Its block reward has halved on schedule, in 2015, 2019 and 2023. Like other crypto assets, it fell sharply in the 2013-2015 and 2018 downturns and again in the 2022 crypto bear market.

⚙️ What moves the price

  • Bitcoin price moves: LTC often follows BTC, so the BTC trend matters.
  • Crypto market sentiment and fund flows into or out of digital assets.
  • Regulation and enforcement news from the US, EU and Asian regulators.
  • Macro risk appetite: central bank policy, rate expectations and liquidity.
  • Exchange listings or delistings, and network changes such as hashrate and mining difficulty.

Character

  • Highly volatile, with large daily percentage moves common.
  • Trades 24/7, including weekends, with no market close.
  • Liquidity is deepest during US and European hours but can thin out fast on weekends or during sell-offs.
  • Often moves in sharp bursts, frequently following Bitcoin.

When to trade

  • High-volume hours: roughly 13:00-17:00 UTC, when US and European sessions overlap.
  • Periods of a clear Bitcoin trend, or around major scheduled macro releases.

When not to trade

  • Thin weekend or overnight periods, where spreads widen and slippage rises.
  • Sudden regulatory headlines or exchange problems, when prices can gap.
  • Trading large size with high leverage, a common cause of forced liquidations.
