Nasdaq 100 (US100)

The 100 largest non-financial companies on Nasdaq — the heart of US tech.

The Nasdaq 100 index includes giants such as Apple, Microsoft, Nvidia, Amazon and Alphabet. It reflects investors' appetite for technology and growth, and it is one of the most traded indices in the world.

🕐 Active hours: New York, 13:30–20:00 UTC

📜 History

The index was launched in 1985 to track large companies on the Nasdaq market, which was then an electronic over-the-counter market. Its growth came with the rise of technology and internet companies in the 1990s. In March 2000 the dot-com bubble peaked, and the index fell by roughly 80% by late 2002. The 2008 financial crisis caused another deep fall as credit markets froze. In March 2020 the COVID-19 shock produced a fast drop of about 30% in a few weeks, followed by a rapid recovery. In 2022 rising interest rates pushed the index into a bear market, with a fall of more than 30% from its peak.

⚙️ What moves the price

  • US Federal Reserve rate decisions and guidance: lower rates usually support growth stocks.
  • US inflation (CPI) and jobs data, which shift rate expectations.
  • US Treasury yields: rising real yields often pressure high-valuation tech stocks.
  • Earnings and guidance from the largest index members, such as Apple, Microsoft, Nvidia and Amazon.
  • Semiconductor cycle and AI-related spending, which affect a large part of the index.

Character

  • Strong intraday moves after the New York open (13:30 UTC).
  • Very sensitive to US interest rates, inflation and big-tech earnings.
  • Rises in calm "risk-on" markets and falls fast in panic.

When to trade

  • The first two hours after the New York cash open (13:30–15:30 UTC).
  • Bounces from key levels formed during the previous session.

When not to trade

  • CPI, Fed decisions and earnings of Apple, Nvidia, Microsoft after the close.
  • Asian hours: futures move slowly and can gap at the open.
  • Holding positions over the weekend.
