3.9043.731

NEAR is the native token of NEAR Protocol, a proof-of-stake blockchain built for apps and smart contracts. It pays network fees and is staked by validators to secure the chain. Traders watch it as a high-beta altcoin that often moves with the wider crypto market.

🕐 Active hours: Trades 24/7. Volume is usually highest around 13:00–17:00 UTC (Europe–US overlap) and during US hours until about 21:00 UTC.

📜 History

NEAR Protocol was founded by Illia Polosukhin and Alexander Skidanov, both former engineers at Google. The project began in 2017 with the goal of making blockchains easier to use and more scalable. Token sales were held in 2018 to fund development. The mainnet went live in 2020 using a proof-of-stake design. The network later added sharding, called Nightshade, to handle more transactions. NEAR rose strongly in the 2021 crypto boom, then fell sharply in the 2022 market crash that followed the collapse of FTX.

⚙️ What moves the price

  • Overall crypto market direction, especially Bitcoin and Ethereum moves, since altcoins often follow them.
  • Global risk appetite, including shifts in US interest rate expectations set by the Federal Reserve.
  • Crypto regulation news in the US, EU and Asia, including rules for tokens and exchanges.
  • Network news such as upgrades, ecosystem growth, and changes in staking or token supply.
  • Exchange listings and liquidity, which can quickly change trading volume and volatility.

Character

  • Highly volatile, with large daily moves that are often bigger than those of major coins.
  • Trades 24/7 with no market close, so sudden moves can happen at any hour.
  • Thin liquidity on some exchanges can cause slippage during fast moves.
  • Tends to move in sharp bursts driven by market sentiment and news flow.

When to trade

  • During high-volume overlap hours when US and European markets are both open.
  • When Bitcoin is trending or stable, since altcoin moves are often clearer then.
  • After major network announcements, once the first reaction has settled.

When not to trade

  • Around major macro events such as US inflation data or Fed decisions, when spreads widen and moves are sharp.
  • During low-volume weekend and late-night hours, when slippage is higher.
  • Using high leverage on a volatile altcoin, since fast moves can trigger liquidation.
