US natural gas, an energy commodity, priced by weather, storage and LNG demand. Very volatile.
Natural gas is a fuel used for heating, power generation and industry. It is an energy commodity, not a metal. Traders usually trade NG/USD through futures, and the US Henry Hub contract is the most watched benchmark.
🕐 Active hours: Most active 13:00-18:00 UTC, with a peak around the EIA report at 14:30 UTC (15:30 UTC in winter).
For decades, natural gas in the United States was sold locally through pipelines, and prices were set by regulation. The Natural Gas Policy Act of 1978 began phasing out federal price controls. The Natural Gas Wellhead Decontrol Act of 1989 removed most remaining wellhead price controls. The New York Mercantile Exchange launched its natural gas futures contract in April 1990, with delivery at the Henry Hub in Louisiana. Price swings grew in the 2000s, and energy trading scandals such as Enron raised scrutiny of the market. Prices peaked above $13 per MMBtu in 2008, then fell below $2 in 2012 as the shale gas boom lifted supply.
