Silver has served as money for thousands of years, from ancient coins to the basis of many monetary systems. Silver was a formal monetary metal in many countries until the 19th and 20th centuries, when most countries moved to gold and then to paper money. In the 1960s and 1970s, the US removed silver from its coins and ended its link to silver money, which changed how the metal was traded. The euro was introduced as an accounting currency in 1999 and as cash in 2002, which created the EUR side of this pair. A major crisis came in 1979-1980, when the Hunt brothers tried to corner the silver market; prices spiked to around 50 US dollars per ounce in January 1980 and then crashed in March 1980. Silver fell sharply during the 2008 financial crisis and again during the March 2020 sell-off. Prices reached new highs in 2011 before falling for several years.
