Anatoly Yakovenko, a former Qualcomm engineer, published the Solana whitepaper in 2017. Solana Labs was founded that year to build a fast, low-cost blockchain. The network's main feature is Proof of History, a timing method that combines with Proof of Stake to speed up transactions. Mainnet Beta launched in March 2020. Solana became one of the largest smart-contract platforms during the 2021 crypto boom, and its price peaked near November 2021. The network suffered several outages in 2021 and 2022, which hurt confidence. In 2022, the Terra collapse, the failure of several lenders and the FTX bankruptcy in November pushed SOL down more than 90% from its peak.
