Justin Sun launched Tron in 2017. TRX was first sold as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum in a token sale in mid-2017. In May 2018 Tron moved to its own mainnet, and TRX became native to that chain. The project aimed to build a decentralised internet for content sharing. In 2018 Tron agreed to acquire BitTorrent, and the deal completed in early 2019. The 2018 crypto bear market hit TRX hard, as it did most altcoins. In March 2023 the US SEC sued Justin Sun and Tron-linked foundations, and the case drew wide attention.
