Charles Dow and Edward Jones, who ran Dow Jones & Company, first published the average on May 26, 1896. It began with 12 industrial stocks as a simple gauge of the market. Charles Dow had also helped found The Wall Street Journal in 1889. The list grew to 30 stocks on October 1, 1928. The index fell sharply in the 1929 crash and during the Great Depression that followed. It dropped about 22.6% in one day on October 19, 1987, known as Black Monday. It fell heavily in the 2008 financial crisis and sharply in March 2020 during the COVID-19 shock.
