USD/CHF (US Dollar / Swiss Franc)

USD/CHF shows how the US dollar moves against the Swiss franc, a major currency pair.

0.823850.82074

USD/CHF shows how many Swiss francs one US dollar buys. It is one of the major currency pairs and is traded for its relatively stable behaviour compared with many other pairs. Traders use it to react to differences in US and Swiss monetary policy and to shifts in global risk appetite.

🕐 Active hours: Most active 12:00-16:00 UTC (London-New York overlap). Good liquidity 07:00-21:00 UTC. Thin during Asian hours.

📜 History

USD/CHF became a free-floating pair after the Bretton Woods system ended. The United States closed the gold window in August 1971, and major currencies moved to floating rates by 1973. The Swiss National Bank (SNB), founded in 1907, has long been known for conservative policy and a strong, stable franc. The franc gained safe-haven status during global crises, including the 2008 financial crisis. In 2011, during the euro debt crisis, the SNB set a minimum exchange rate of 1.20 francs per euro, which it removed on 15 January 2015, causing sharp moves across franc pairs. The SNB also introduced negative deposit rates in December 2014.

⚙️ What moves the price

  • SNB policy: interest rates, currency intervention, and statements at its monetary policy decisions.
  • Federal Reserve policy and US Treasury yields: higher US rates often support the dollar against the franc.
  • US economic data such as nonfarm payrolls, CPI inflation, and retail sales.
  • Risk sentiment: fear and geopolitical shocks often strengthen the franc and push USD/CHF lower.
  • Swiss economic data, such as inflation and trade figures, which add smaller moves.

Character

  • Moderate volatility, usually calmer than GBP or JPY pairs, but can jump on SNB surprises.
  • Often trends during risk-off periods, then stabilises as conditions settle.
  • Closely linked to EUR/CHF, since the franc often moves against both the euro and the dollar.
  • Most liquid during the London-New York overlap.

When to trade

  • London-New York overlap, 12:00-16:00 UTC, when liquidity and spreads are usually best.
  • Around scheduled US data releases, when price reactions are often clear.
  • Check the SNB and Federal Reserve calendars before planning trades.

When not to trade

  • Thin Asian hours, when spreads can widen and price moves can be erratic.
  • Right before or during SNB announcements or unexpected rate decisions.
  • Assuming the franc always rises in fear. Its response depends on the cause of the risk event and on current policy.
