US Dollar / Swedish Krona (USD/SEK)

Major pair of the US dollar against Sweden's krona, driven by Fed and Riksbank policy and global risk mood.

9.795179.90001

USD/SEK shows how many Swedish kronor one US dollar buys. It is a G10 pair often grouped with the Nordic currencies. Traders use it to compare US and Swedish monetary policy and to express views on global risk appetite.

🕐 Active hours: Most active about 07:00–16:00 UTC (Stockholm and London hours), with peak liquidity 12:00–16:00 UTC during the US overlap.

📜 History

The krona was introduced in 1873, when Sweden joined the Scandinavian Monetary Union and replaced the riksdaler. Sweden left the gold standard in 1931 during the Great Depression. After the Second World War, the krona was tied to gold and the US dollar under the Bretton Woods system. In 1949 Sweden devalued the krona by about 30 percent against the dollar. After Bretton Woods ended in the early 1970s, the krona was linked to a basket of trading partners' currencies. In November 1992, after a currency crisis, Sweden let the krona float freely, and the Riksbank later adopted an inflation target. The 2008 financial crisis and the 2015 move into negative policy rates both caused sharp moves in the pair.

⚙️ What moves the price

  • US Federal Reserve policy and US Treasury yields: higher US rates usually lift USD/SEK.
  • Riksbank rate decisions and guidance: a more hawkish Riksbank tends to strengthen the krona.
  • Swedish inflation, GDP and labour market data, which shape expectations for Riksbank policy.
  • Global risk sentiment: the krona often weakens in risk-off periods and strengthens when risk appetite returns.
  • EUR/USD and euro area economic trends, since Sweden is closely linked to the European economy.

Character

  • Moderate volatility among major pairs, with larger moves around rate decisions and risk shocks.
  • Often trends when global risk mood or rate expectations shift.
  • Liquidity is deepest in European hours and the early US session; spreads widen in late Asian hours.
  • The krona has a smaller share of global trading volume than the dollar or euro, so moves can be sharp.

When to trade

  • During Stockholm and London hours, when Swedish and European markets are open.
  • During the US overlap, when volume is highest and spreads are usually tightest.
  • Around scheduled Riksbank and Fed decisions, when only with clear risk limits in place.

When not to trade

  • Just before and during Riksbank or Fed announcements, when gaps and sudden spikes are common.
  • Late US and Asian hours, when liquidity thins and spreads widen.
  • Swedish public holidays such as Midsummer and Christmas, when trading volume often drops.
  • Chasing sharp moves without a stop loss, a common mistake in fast markets.
