Trades the US dollar against the South African rand, a commodity-linked emerging-market currency.

16.662616.5282

USD/ZAR shows how many South African rand one US dollar buys. Traders use it to express views on emerging-market risk, South African policy and commodity prices. It is one of the more volatile major emerging-market pairs.

🕐 Active hours: Most active around 12:00–16:00 UTC, during the London–New York overlap. Liquidity is thin and spreads widen outside this window.

📜 History

The rand was introduced in 1961, when South Africa became a republic and replaced the pound at two rand to one pound. During the 1980s, sanctions, a debt standstill and political unrest led to a dual exchange rate system in 1985, with a separate financial rand for foreign investors. The dual system was abolished in 1995, and exchange controls were gradually eased. The rand has largely floated since the early 2000s, with the South African Reserve Bank targeting inflation. Sharp sell-offs came during the 2008 global financial crisis, after the 2015 cabinet reshuffle, and during the 2020 pandemic, when the rand fell to record lows against the dollar.

⚙️ What moves the price

  • US Federal Reserve policy and US dollar strength: higher US rates or a stronger dollar usually push USD/ZAR up
  • South African Reserve Bank rate decisions and inflation data
  • Gold, platinum and other metal prices, since South Africa is a major exporter
  • Global risk sentiment: investors tend to sell emerging-market currencies when risk appetite falls
  • Domestic political news, fiscal policy and sovereign credit rating actions

Character

  • Volatility is higher than in major pairs such as EUR/USD
  • Sharp gaps and fast moves can occur on risk-off headlines or ratings news
  • Liquidity is best during London and New York hours and thinner in the Asian session
  • Price often moves with commodity prices and broad emerging-market currency trends

When to trade

  • During the London–New York overlap, when liquidity and spreads are most favourable
  • Around major US data releases and Federal Reserve decisions, with awareness of risk
  • Around South African Reserve Bank decisions and key local data releases

When not to trade

  • Late Asian hours and thin holiday sessions, when spreads widen and gaps are more likely
  • Holding large positions through weekend or unexpected political news
  • Using high leverage, since the pair can move several percent in a short time
