Brent Crude Oil (XBR/USD)

Brent crude oil benchmark, priced in US dollars. Note: it is an energy commodity, not a metal.

112.3596.767

Brent is a benchmark price for crude oil from the North Sea. It is not a metal. Traders use it to trade global oil price moves, which reflect supply, demand and geopolitics. Brent is one of the two main oil benchmarks, along with WTI.

🕐 Active hours: Most active 08:00-16:30 UTC (London hours), with a second peak 13:00-17:00 UTC (US overlap). Trades nearly 24 hours, Sunday evening to Friday.

📜 History

The Brent oilfield was discovered in the North Sea in 1971, and production began in 1976. The name comes from the field. Brent oil became a benchmark because many buyers in Europe and elsewhere accept it. ICE launched Brent futures in 1988, which created a standard, tradable price. The 1973 oil embargo and the 1979 Iranian revolution caused sharp price jumps. Prices fell hard in 1986 and again in 2014-2016. Brent rose above 140 dollars in 2008 and above 120 dollars in 2022, after Russia invaded Ukraine.

⚙️ What moves the price

  • OPEC and OPEC+ production decisions set supply levels and often move prices sharply.
  • Weekly inventory data, such as EIA and API reports, shows changes in supply and demand.
  • Geopolitics in the Middle East and around Russia can quickly add or remove supply risk.
  • Global economic growth, especially in China and the US, affects oil demand.
  • A stronger US dollar often pressures dollar-priced oil. The Brent-WTI spread shows regional balance.

Character

  • Volatility is often high, with large moves on news and supply shocks.
  • Price can gap when markets reopen after weekend geopolitical events.
  • Trends can last for months during supply cycles, but reversals are common.
  • Liquidity is deepest during London and US trading hours.

When to trade

  • London hours and the early New York session, when futures volume is highest.
  • Around the weekly EIA inventory report and OPEC+ meeting dates.

When not to trade

  • Late Asian session hours, when liquidity thins and spreads widen.
  • Holding large positions through surprise geopolitical headlines without a stop-loss.
  • Treating Brent as a metal. Its price is driven by oil fundamentals.
