Palladium was discovered in 1803 by English chemist William Hyde Wollaston. He named it after the asteroid Pallas, which had been found in 1802. For much of the 20th century it had few industrial uses. Demand grew from the 1970s and 1980s, when many countries required catalytic converters on petrol cars to cut emissions. Russia and South Africa became the main producers. Prices passed $1,000 per ounce in 2001 and then fell sharply. Prices hit record highs in 2022, after Russia's invasion of Ukraine raised fears about Russian supply.
