The XRP Ledger was launched in 2012 by Jed McCaleb and Chris Larsen, with the aim of faster and cheaper payments than Bitcoin. The full supply of 100 billion XRP was created at the start, not mined. Ripple, the company that builds products on the ledger, holds a large share of the supply. In 2017 Ripple placed part of its holdings in escrow and began releasing them monthly to limit sudden sales. XRP reached a top-three market value in early 2018 during the broad crypto boom. In December 2020 the US SEC sued Ripple, claiming that some XRP sales were unregistered securities offerings. In July 2023 a US court ruled that sales on exchanges were not securities, but institutional sales were, which moved the price sharply.
