Settlement-grown food sold in Australia as 'produce of Israel'
Analysis by the human rights legal organisation Global Echo shows that 85 of 132 shipments over eight years included more than US$5m of organic dates grown in settlements. Millions of dollars' worth of food grown in illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank has been shipped to Australia labelled as "produce of Israel", according to new analysis of trade data. Global Echo based its findings on commercial documents and official trade data from the Israeli government and the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
📊 What it means for markets
News like this mainly concerns trade labelling, import rules and political scrutiny rather than commodity prices. Markets are usually little affected, though it may draw attention to food origin rules and trade ties with Israel.
